Is Nystatin Advisable For Leukoplakia And Voice Hoarseness?

My friend and client Dr. Byron Williams, chief of medicine at Emory midtown here in Atlanta, looked with my tactical flashlight at the back of my throat and said I had leukoplakia and my doctor at the VAMC here saw it, not giving it a name, but since it looked suspiscios she has referred me to the ENT clinic at the VA. Now, Dr. Byron Williams said for me to use Nystatin Bid for a week or two and it may goaway. Meanwhile, Ent at the VA is to call me to schedule and appointment. Do you think the nystatin may cure it. I also have acid reflux GERD and take two meds BID. what do you say I should do.? Idon t hurt or have any pain, but my voice is very hoarse and sometimes it s difficult to get words out, must be on my vocal chords?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Leukoplakia is not a fungal infection rather it is due to excessive keratin formation over the mucosal surface with cellular atypia and has to be taken care of as it is pre cancerous lesion and should be treated at the earliest along with eliminating the underlying cause that is causing it.
As far as Nystatin is concerned, it is an antifungal preparation and can help if there is a fungal/yeast infection.
So in case if the diagnosis is confirmed as Leukoplakia then it will not improve the patches.
However if it is thrush they Nystatin can help in its resolution.
So first of all you need to get a confirmed diagnosis done for which a Biopsy can be done..
Accordingly the treatment can be done.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
