Is Nortriptyline The Right Medication For Chronic Back Pain?

I just saw my Doctor for chronic back pain and had a MRI. My pain strated in lower back and runs down my leg. I was prescribed prednisone and it did not help. My Doctor presribed Nortriptyline 25 mg and the bottle says it it for back pain but I have since discovered it is an anti=depressant. I have now depression issues and did not relate any to my Doctor. Why would he give me this medication ?

Hello,

Nortryptilline is quite effective for long standing pain like chronic back ache. Other drugs like gabapentin or tramadol can also be tried. In severe cases you can also opt for steroid injection as it will give longer pain free period.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
