Is Mucinex Tablet The Right Medication For Bronchitis?

It s been about a month since I suffered thru a bad cold with a lot of mucus and coughing. I went to an urgent place since my doctor was not available. She said it was bronchitis so she prescribed a DM cough medicine and I took Mucinex. The coughing and the mucus was really not improving so finally I was able to see my doc. She prescribed a antibiotic for 5 days and DM cough medicine. I feel better but I still have a little cough. She told me it may take a little time for the coughing to go away since I had bronchitis. I am currently a smoker so I know I should not be smoking. Just asking is this normal for the coughing after a month.

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of bronchitis and bad cold with a lot of mucus and coughing which is due to severe upper respiratory tract infection.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to do warm saline gargles with pinch of salt water. Take expectorants. Mucinex alone is not sufficient for you. You should start with course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. Steam inhalation is very effective for you. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist without any delay . Doctor may order blood test, throat swab test and X-ray chest. Go for complete blood count and platelet count as well. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics amoxicillin at least for 10 days along with mucolytic agents. You should avoid hot, sharp and spicy foods. Avoid giving cold beverages. You should take mast cell stabilizers to prevent from infection.
