General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.

The mainstay of treatment for sciatica is activity modification and pain medication. Morphine is not the initial medication for severe sciatica pain.

The usual prescribed analgesic (pain relieving medication) includes NSAIDs (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as Meloxicam and Diclofenac.

Paracetamol and muscle relaxants such as Cyclobenzaprin and Tizanidine are also frequently prescribed.

If the pain is severe and not relieved by these measures, stronger medication such as an opioid (Codeine or Morphine) may be prescribed for relief. Opioid medications are best used for short periods of time.

Concomitant use of opioids with benzodiazepines like Valium (Diazepam) may result in excessive sedation, hypotension, respiratory depression, coma, and death.

Had you been my patient I would have prescribed Gabapentin or Pregablin along with NSAIDs for the relief of pain along with activity modification.

Hope these answer your query.
