Is Methimazole 5mg The Right Medicine For Hypothyroidism?

Hello, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in 2004 and have been on methimazole for the past 11 years. For the past year, I ve been taking 5mg 4 times a week. Yesterday, I went in for my standard thyroid test and just received the test results. My TSH value is at 1. Can one become immune to Methimazole? I ve been taking it for 11 years. 2. Will increasing my dosage get me back to normal value? I do not want to get my thyroid removed. Thank you

Hello,
I have carefully read your report and I can understand your query.
First I would like you to inform that taking methimazole for 11 years is not recommended. The maximum time of treatment is 18 month.
Than if the hyperthyroidism persists a definite treatment with surgery or radioactive iodine is suggested.
If you are against surgery I would recommend you the treatment with radioactive iodine but first you have to discuss with your treating doctor if that is appropriate for you (depends by the etiology of hyperthyroidism).
Your actual TSH value is within the normal ranges under treatment. But you have to check the FT4 and FT3 level for a better information.
Hope the information is helpful.

Best wishes,
Dr.M.Guni
