Is Meloxicam An Addictive Medicine?

My niece is a former drug addict....clean 2 years but still takes sleeping pills. She insists she is in constant pain and went to urgent care who sent her to ER. They prescribed Meloxicam. She also has a heart condition (irregular heartbeat) and has been under a doctor s care for that on and off since she s been 5. She drinks alcohol occasionally. Is this new drug addicting and what might I need to watch for given her history? She lives with me. Thanks.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Do not worry about Meloxicam as this drug is not at all addictive. It may cause serious trouble particularly when used improperly. Peptic ulcers, renal damage, liver insult, high blood pressure, allergic reactions, etc are some of its potential side effects.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
