Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I just went to the Dr. and was told that my cholesterol is 250! I am 24, exercise rigorously 4-6 times a week and I am very anxious about this. I weigh 186 and am 5 11 . He wanted to put me on a statin - Lipitor.I want to lower this on my own. Please help. Thank you.
Yes your cholesterol level are raised, but do not worry as you are on a good exercise schedule just carry on with it and dont panic. The thing i want to suggest you is that just have a look at your eating habits like are you on a diet of junk food most of the time, how frequent and how much you eat at a time ? If yes then you need to be on a proper diet schedule like having small and frequent meals, start having a healthy fiber rich diet along with fruits avoids packed food and food with high SATURATED fats. And another important thing STOP SMOKING (IF YOU DO).Keep following this strictly for 3 months and then check your cholesterol levels again. You probably need no meds if your levels come down with this regime. Another thing which i want you to confirm that whether or not any of your parents have high cholesterol levels or not.
There is no need to take a statin in your age. Despite your high cholesterol you have quite low cardiovascular risk in your age if you follow healthy lifestyle. So don't worry, don't take any statin and continue healthy lifestyle.
Take care
