Is Lidocaine Or Novacaine Advisable For Swollen Face, Ear And Headache?

What is the difference in strenght between lidocaine and novacaine? Last week dentist gave me three shots of novacaine plus 80% gas for a filling. I felt the pain of his working so bad, he had to stop. face swelled, hurt bad, ear and head hurt bad for three days. Went back to dentist a week later, he gave me five shots of lidocaine plus 80% gas to finish procedure, pain really bad so he stopped. Face did not swell but nine hours later, pain still very bad, no headache but ear hurts. I only have a temp. filling now; what should I do? (two questions, sorry)

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain Lidocaine is an amide based local anaesthetic gents wile Novocaine is an ester based local anaesthetic agent cotaining active ingredient Procaine..
Both are of different groups and are frequently used local anaesthetics in dental practice..
It seems that the symptoms of swollen face can be due to side effect of Novocaine..
Ineffectivity of the Anaesthetic can also be due to infection in the tooth and there can be pus formation and anaesthetic solution cannot work well in acidic environment..
As you did not get any reaction to Lidocaine it seems that you are compatible to it..
Pain after nine hours of treatment shows that there is still severe infection in the tooth or the filling is done directly over the nerves leading to nerve inflammation and pain..
I would suggest you to consult an Endodontist and get evaluated and he can do an x ray and also treat you according to the exact cause of the problem..
You can be advised root canal treatment or extraction depending upon tooth condition..
As of now you can take higher painkillers like Tramadol to relieve pain..
Do cool compresses over the face..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
