Is Klonopin Advisable For An Elderly Person With Dementia And Alzheimer S?

Mom is 99 years old and suffering from dementia and alzheimer s in a nursing home. They want to treat her with a very small dosage of klonipin for a longer term affect for anxiety and sleeping disorders and possible appetite increase? Should we go ahead with the idea or hold back on this as it may cause other issues and dangerous side effects? She is a hospice patient, however not in iminent danger as some patients are. Please reply and thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The small dose may help to control some issues that she may have.

She may or may not experience side effects with a small dose. Side effects are possible with any medication unfortunately but they may not necessarily today.

I hope this helps
