Is Ibuprofen Advisable For Fever And Nausea?

I have a 17 year old son who woke up this morning and had breakfast, said his stomach hurt, but went to school. A couple of hours later he came home and said he felt like he was going to throw up. He went back to bed and probably slept for an hour. Then he did vomit. After that he felt better, and went back to school. Within an hour he was back home because he felt tired and naseous. He complained of being cold, so at 6:00 pm I took his temp and it was 99.7. I took it again at 8:20 and it was 103.3. I thought he had a 24 hour stomach flu, but I didn't think a fever usually accompanied that. I just gave him an ibuprofen. Is that the best thing to do? He is supposed to run at a state cross country meet on Saturday, so I want to do whatever I can to help him get well. Any thoughts?

hello

I read your statement and i understand your concern

If he has stomach pain and vomiting due to gastric irritation ie gastritis, then pain killers and anti fever drugs like Ibuprofen are not given, because they decrease protection of stomach wall against the gastric HCL

But since, he has fever and vomiting, its important to diagnose his condition

It could be upper gastroenteritis ie inflammation of upper gut, that is called gastrooesophegeal reflux disease. Since fever is also there, its important for you to test for H.pylori and Typhoid.

If i were his doctor, i would test him for Typhoid and H.pyroli, and then start therapy. If fever is still high, you can give panadol but along with stomach protective pill ie Proton Pump Inhibitor. The good one among this group is Omeprazole ie Tab Risek 20mg two times a day before meal.

in Nutshell

> Give him panadol three times a day along with omeprazole twice a day
> Take him to physician to diagnose the cause of fever and vomiting and nuasuea

Thanks
