Is Hydrocodone Safe To Be Taken Along With Gabapentin For Shingles?

My husband has Shingles going up his right arm, shoulder and the right side of his face. He is taking Gabapentin at 300 mg., 2 tablets 3 x s a day. His pain is unbearable. Can he take stronger doses of Gabapentin as well as the Hydrocodone they have prescribed him?

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hi.
As per your case history of shingles, my treatment advice is -
1. Gabapentin and hydrocodone have moderate interaction, so should be avoided together.
2. There is increase in side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, confusion when both these medications are taken together.
3. It is better to continue gabapentin and take a NSAID like aceclofenac when there are episodes of pain.

Thanks.
