Is Glyciphage Along With Insulin Advisable For Gestational Diabetes?

Hi i have gestational diabetes at 23 weeks. I am on insulin Human Mixtard (R) 5 and 4 units morning and night. My doctor has prescribed me Glyciphage 250mg as the sugar level is still not under control. Is it safe to use it during pregnancy as i have read that one should not take it along with insulin. Thanks in advance

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern regarding the safety of Glyciphage during pregnancy.

Yes, Glyciphage can be given along with Insulin to control gestational diabetes mellitus.

Glyciphage (Metformin) considered safe during pregnancy. It will not affect your uterus in any bad way or for that matter your pregnancy. You may continue it. There have been no demonstrable teratogenic effects, intra-uterine deaths, still births or developmental delays reported with metformin use in pregnancy.

Since your blood sugar was not controlled with Insulin alone hence your doctor prescribed Glyciphage along with Insulin for the management of gestational diabetes.
There's nothing to worry you can continue to take the treatment.

A feed back is appreciated.
