History of pagents bone disease in mother side...she had it in skull, spine and hips. I show no signs (68 year old female)...i do have osteoporosis in my spine and osteopinia in hips. Tibial plateau stress fracture not healing...doc prescribed Forteo...after reading am concerned about taking it due to pagets and vit D deficiency. What are your thoughts on this?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Forteo is an injectable medication composed of teriparatide (rDNA origin), which is used in both men and postmenopausal women with osteoporosis who are at high risk for having broken bones, or fractures. It helps to reinforce bone in two ways: 1. Replaces bone which is lost due to osteoporosis. 2. Adds more bone than what was present before treatment Vitamin D supplementation is crucial for patients taking Forteo. Forteo administration is contraindicated in patients with Paget’s disease of bone. In your case, you are not having Paget's disease but only a family history. Unexplained elevations of alkaline phosphatase may indicate Paget’s disease of bone. You can get the enzyme levels checked after the treatment and consult your doctor in case it is elevated for further course of management.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran.S.
