Is Flucloxacillin Sufficient To Treat Cellulitis?

My son has developed cellulitis in the past several times and always the doctor prescribes both flucloxacillin and amoxicillin which always works in a couple of days. I recently changed doctors and he has cellulitis at the moment but the doctor he is with now has only given him flucloxacillin

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is unusual to receive 2 types of the same family of antibiotics. Flucloxacillin and Amoxicillin are both penicillins. Normally, when antibiotics are combined, it is antibiotics of different families that work in slightly different ways, they work together to effect change. Flucloxacillin is commonly used for cellulitis, Amoxicillin is not as commonly used for this condition.

He needs to find out the reason for the repeated episodes of cellulitis, this is unusual. He may need a screen of his immune system. A swab or blood culture may also be needed it is possible that the repeat episodes are occurring because there is resistance to the typical antibiotics.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
