Is ELISA Test Reliable To Detect HIV Infection?

HI doctor, i recently had a sex with a prostitue in India. I used a condom but not sure whether her vagina fluid touched my penis tip after removing the condom. I took a elisa (HIV 1 and HIV2) after 6 weeks and it came negative. Im from india. I dont know whether the test is 3 or 4th generation. Can this negative result is reliable

Thank you for query.The chances of HIV is 1 in 200 to 1 in 2000 unprotected intercourse with HIV positive partner. If condom is used there is further lesser chances.the Elisa test for HIV tests mainly for antibodies.it may take sometimes 3 to 6 months after exposure.So the tests may come negative at 6 weeks post exposure.So it may be necessary for retest Elisa after 6 months exposure to be sure of HIV free status.You can get back to me for any clarifications with details.Dr Bharatesh D Basti Dermatologist and Venereologist
