Is Donnatal The Same As Bentyl?

I have tried so many meds Donnatol being the latest which worked in the past However , not so much anymore. I have IBS and thought i would try Bentyl and it appears to be helping but have been on it only a few days. What is the difference between it and Donnatol.? I also take a probiotic daily. Is it really an imbalance in the good and bad bacteria in the gut?

Hi,

Both these medications act by relieving the painful bowel spasms and are commonly used in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome however, they slightly differ in their composition.

Donnatal contains belladonna alkaloids such as hyoscyamine, atropine and scopolamine along with phenobarbitone.

Whereas Bentyl contains the antispasmodic dicyclomine. Irritable bowel syndrome is a common disorder that affects the large intestine characterized by cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea or constipation, or both.

Its exact cause is not known. However, one of the risk factors appears to be altered gut flora for which probiotics are being prescribed.
