Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Diltiazem Effective In The Treatment Of Hypertension?
JUST SEEING WHAT DIFFERENCE IN taking Diltiazem long acting blood pressure medicine than the other that he was taking was Bystollic AND HE TAKES LYNCELPHIL AT NIGHT.STOPPING THE BYSTOLLIC AND STARTING Diltiazem his blood pressure has dropped 70 points--so what makes this one so much better .
Diltiazem is effective in blood pressure control as apart from its effect on heart rate it also relaxes the blood vessel wall muscles.
All the calcium antagonist class of drugs to which it belongs have such a blood pressure lowering effect.
It is not an indication it is usually given for as other calcium antagonists are more effective for blood pressure lowering purpose, Diltiazem is given mainly for its heart rate slowing properties (like Bystolic).
It is no a common first choice as medications like Bystolic have more long-term beneficial effects on heart muscle, that is why it was first prescribed to you I assume (of course not familiar with the details of your case).
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
