Is Delsym Cough Syrup The Right Medicine For Severe Cough?

MY daughter who is 17, has a really bad cough. She has had a cold for about a week. her firends have had the same symptoms. She is not really producing any mucus with the cough. A teacher told her when she had this virus, she took Tessalon Pearls. I have looked into these but they look kind of dangerous. Also, she takes Sertraline daily. (She also takes Trazodone at night sometimes) I am not sure they would be the best option, but she is really struggling with this cough, and was coughing a lot during the night despite trying delsym cough syrup. What do you think about the Tessalon pearls? and can you recommend something else.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your daughter have severe cough with mucus which seems to be due to chest infection/ chronic upper respiratory tract infection. You can take Delsym syrup as it will give you soothing effects. I would suggest you to take cough expectorants and do warm saline gargles. You should take steam inhalation on daily basis. You should take antibiotic Amoxicillin in combination with antiallergic medication Sinarest. Visit ENT specialist once and get it examined. You should get X-ray chest and throat swab test done and start treatment after proper diagnosis. Avoid oily and sharp food. Drink plenty of fluids.
