Is Clomipramine Effective In The Treatment Of Narcolepsy?

I understand that clomipramine is very effective in treating narcolepsy. It seems to be used in europe. Is it effective? Is it available in the us? My son has narcolepsy. He is 36, is under care of someone who sees only a few narcolepsy patients, so i d like to know if it s worth bringing this to her attention as a possible option. He is currently taking modafidil and it helps, but still a struggle. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Clomipramine is effective in managing cataplexy (muscle weakness) associated with narcolepsy.

So the decision to start clomipramine or not will depend on what specific symptoms of Narcolepsy is bothering him the most.

Please be advised to discuss his symptoms in detail with the treating physician and see if clomipramine would be an appropriate choice for your son.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Lekshmi Rita Venugopal, General & Family Physician
