Is Clarithromycin The Right Medicine For Tonsillitis?
My son has tonsillitis for 5 weeks. Started taking clarithrymicin 24 hours ago but his throat is no better. This is the third course of antibiotics inside 5 weeks. How soon should we expect to see an improvement?GP said if no better go to casualty. When should we make that call?
I have gone through the medical history of your son and am sorry for the health problems he is going through.
Tonsillitis is an infection of the tonsils that is sometimes difficult to treat especially if caused by strep bacteria and when resistance is developed (which I suspect in case of your son).
Culture of throat swab for strep or other bacteria or candida/virus will help determine the right causative agent and proper treatment.
If clarithromycin was prescribed based on sensitivity testing, then, 24 hours is not enough to note the changes. It might require a few more days until fully improved.
I also advise to: - gargle with warm water and salt - keep good oral hygiene - oral antiseptics might be helpful
Wish fast recovery.
