Is Atenolol 50mg Sufficient For Hypertension?

Doctor prescribed 50mg Atenolol twice a day. I usually only take it once a day for HTN. Will taking the second 50mg dose at night cause bradycardia? Could I cut a 50mg tablet in half and take only 25mg at night to see if it s enough to control my HTN?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Atenolol is not used as commonly now to control blood pressure because there are a lot more effective options.
It is still used and may be still effective but it is not used as often.

Your eventual pulse rate would depend on your baseline, where you would have started from eg if original pulse was 80, 88 etc

It is quite possible that the pulse would not too low and cause problems.
You can check it at night before taking the medication and note the value.

I hope this helps
