Is Arimidex Effective For Treatment For Breast Cancer?

I had Stage 1A breast cancer in 2015, had lumpectomy, chemo and rad and have had to take follow up meds. I had lots of body aches with letrozole after 4 months, tried taking Aromasin for the last 6-7 weeks and had unusual non-infection vaginal discharge and lots of hair loss. Now my doctor has given me Arimidex to try. Will this be better for these types of problems?

Hi,

Aromasin is composed of 'Exemestane', which is a medication used to treat breast cancer. It is a member of the class of anti-estrogens known as aromatase inhibitors.

Common side effects of Aromasin include hot flashes, headache, hair loss, joint/bone/muscle pain, tiredness, anxiety, unusual or increased sweating, and nausea.

Arimidex is composed of 'Anastrozole', which is a medication used in addition to other treatments for breast cancer. It is specifically used for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer.

Common side effects of Arimidex include constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, loss of appetite, body aches and pains, and breast swelling/tenderness/pain.

Using exemestane or anastrozole is part of hormone therapy, which may help fight breast cancer by reducing the production of estrogen.

Since you are experiencing side effects with Aromasin, the doctor has changed the medication to Arimidex.

Kindly take the medication as prescribed by your doctor and do the necessary follow-up as advised.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ashakiran S, General & Family Physician
