Is Amoxicillin Or Doxycycline Better Post A Heart Surgery?

I take Amiodarone and will be having two different procedures two days in a row.For your info, I have an artificial heart valve. First day I am having a root canal with the dentist prescribing Amoxicillin before an after. The next day I have surgery for a Melanoma on my face. This doctor said Doxacycline is what he prescribes afterward because of surgery and the fact I am taking Amiodarone. What do you think is the best antibiotic to take care of both procedures?

Hello,

Amoxicillin drug is better than Doxycycline drug in your case. If you are not allergic to Penicillin like Amoxicillin is effective in preventing infection in both the procedures.

Further, Amoxicillin is a bactericidal (kills the bacteria directly and eliminate a big part of the bacteria population rapidly) whereas Doxycycline is bacteriostatic (prevents the growth of bacteria) hence Amoxicillin is preferred over Doxycycline to cover for both the surgical procedures.

There is no harmful interaction between Amoxicillin and the antiarrhythmic drug Amiodarone. So, take a course of Amoxicillin as prescribed by your doctor.
