General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome to HCM.
Peripheral neuritis (inflamed nerves) is an important side effect of anti-TB medication Isoniazide (INH) which is due to deficiency of Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine).
It is uncommon at conventional INH dosage but more common in the malnourished, diabetes, HIV, renal failure, alcoholism, pregnant and breastfeeding women. This side effect is dose related.
Pyridoxine supplementation is recommended only in such conditions to prevent neuritis.
The INH-induced peripheral neuropathy can be prevented by supplementing 10 mg Pyridoxine for every 100 mg INH or in the dose of 25-50 mg in high risk patients as mentioned above.
Hence, in view of the above the prescribed dose should be between 25-50 mg/day. You are also advised to take fruits and vegetables which are also a good source of vitamins including Pyridoxine.
Hope the suggestions given above would be useful.
