Irritation in right upper eye, swollen and red. Is it cause for scratched sclera?

Hi, I think my husband has a scratched sclera. he s complaining of irritation to R upper eye. He got hit in the eye with a shoe. We rinsed his eye out under running water and then put OTC drops in it. His eye is red and a little swollen on the outside (mainly from him rubbing). He complains of light sensitivity. What else should we do?

Light sensitivity in your husband's case is probably due to corneal swelling or a corneal abrasion following injury with the shoe. If he is experiencing a foreign body or a pricking sensation you need to rule out the presence of a small dirt or dust particle in his eye. In the event of an abrasion he requires an antibiotic and anti inflammatory medication along with an antibiotic ointment in the eye and overnight patching to give it time to heal. The antibiotic you may use is Tobramycin eye drops 4 times a day and Ketorolac eye drops 3 times a day. Use an antibiotic eye ointment at night and patch the eye shut. Make sure throughout that the vision in that eye does not worsen by periodically checking keeping the other eye closed.
