Insurance Company Wants To Change Benicar Hctz To Either Loser Or Irbesartan. Is It Same Or Different?

My insurance company wants me to change Benicar Hctz to one of the following: loser ten-HCTZ, irbesartan-HCTZ, or valsartan-HCTZ. I know they are from the same classification of anti hypertensive medications, but I would like to know how Benicar differs. ( I take Benicar-HCTZ) Thank you.

Hi Molly, Welcome to HCM.

Benicar-HCTZ is a combination of angiotensin II receptor blocker (Olmesartan) and diuretic (Hydrochlorthiazide). Although all angiotensin II receptor blocker have the same action i.e. blocking angiotensin II receptors to lower blood pressure, some have better blood pressure lowering properties. Thus, amongst them Benicar has slightly better blood pressure lowering action at a given dose than the rest. However, each antihypertensive should be titrated based on the clinical condition thus I will advise you to consult your primary physician while changing your medication.

Hope this helps.
