Dear Amy Trotter,
Smoking is bad or rather very very bad for your gums in addition to your general health. Its advisable to stop at the earliest. Numerous dentists nowadays offer Smoking Cessation Tips if you are interested in kicking off the habit. For the gum infection please visit a dentist (preferably a Periodontist) to get your teeth cleaned (Scaling & Root Planing) once every 3 months depending upon how much you smoke. Its also important to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner or you can use the same brush & paste though gently..
Which Toothpaste & Mouth wash do you use?

hi and welcome to HCM,
Smoking is indeed a injurious habit , it has affects the general health of an individual as well as oral health.
Tobacco smoking causes inflammation of the oral tissue and greatly influences the periodontal health.
it causes gingival inflammation , redness ,bleeding gums and recession.
First thing you can do is try and get rid of the habit , you can use habit breaking lozenges available in market like nicorett tablets ,chewing gums which will help breaking the habit.
i suggest you to go for thorough scaling and root planing of teeth by a dentist foloowed by a course of medication will restore good gum health.
Go for professional gum cleaning every 4 months, use antiseptic mouth wash like chlorhexidine for oral rinsing .
take care.

dear friend.

thanks for sharing your concern.

as you know your gums are infected leading to soreness and bleeding.if it is neglected it might progress and affect the whole periodontium.

remember smoking aggravates periodontitis.there fore quit smoking as soon as possible.

do warm saline rinses.

use chlorhexidine2% mouth wash daily for around two weeks.

visit your dentist for an OPG.this will show you the condition of underlying bone.

hope this helps.
