Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Most of children with absence seizures may require anticonvulsant drug for longer time like 2 to 3 years.

Once there are no seizures in this duration or the seizures are well controlled with medication, then the doctor will assess for the risk of recurrence and will advise you on continuation or stopping the drugs.

The fits medications usually decreased on a gradual manner if there are no seizures for 2 to 3 years.

The dose will be tapered after 2 to 3 years of seizure free interval.

Nothing to worry and be positive, continue the medication as per the advise.

Good drug compliance and adherence is the key factor in the success of fits management.

She can lead a normal life with the medication and regular follow up.

Be in regular follow up with her doctor.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.

Pediatrician Dr. Taher Y Kagalwala's  Response
Dear J,

I am truly sad to hear that your precious daughter has absence seizures or what is called Petit Mal epilepsy. I cannot predict with 100% accuracy whether her problems will go away, but generally speaking, this type of epilepsy has a good chance of going away as the child grows up. Please do not be disheartened. Continue following the doctor's advice. She will need medication for at least 4-5 years, and perhaps more.
