Increased Heartbeat, Skipping Beats. What Can This Be?

My heart is pounding in my chest . When I check my pulse on my throat I can feel the pounding, but it will also stop beating and then start. again there is no set amount of beats before it stops and begins again. Sometimes 7 and stop or pause and 13 and pause ect. ect. I had my niece feel it without telling her what to look for and she felt it as well. What can this be?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi ! Good morning. Did you experience any giddiness or breathlessness ? From your history, it seems that there is some problem in the conduction of impulses to the heart muscle from the initiating point of the impulse, due to which some heartbeats are missing, and that is what is felt by you s a missing beat. This is known as conduction defect. However, sometimes anxiety can also give rise to such physical symptoms. If you can exclude the anxiety factor, then I would advise you to take an appointment with a cardiologist of your area soon for further management.

Cardiologist Dr. Anantharamakrishnan's  Response
Hi friend,
Welcome to Health Care Magic

A beat comes earlier than normal – this itself is not usually felt. The next beat is a bit delayed - longer time to recover form early extra beat – so heart fills more and the beat appears forcible – thud / lubb - - dubb - - lubb - - dubb - lub - - - DUBB /
The first step is to see a Cardiologist / Irregular heart beats need to be DOCUMENTED by ElectroCardioGram (EKG). Standard ECG records the electrical activity of the heart, for a few seconds. It can detect the arrhythmia occurring during that time only. If the episode occurs randomly, one needs Holter or event monitor.
Anaemia / Anxiety / Alcohol / Tobacco (smoking) / Caffeine (too much tea, coffee, cola) / Fever / Infection / Pain / Stress / Thyroid / Vitamin D, calcium, magnesium / Medicines like Phenylephrine used for ‘cold’; Salbutamol used for asthma and so on - may be responsible.... / Illicit ‘drugs’ like Amphetamine are notorious to cause abnormal beats / At times, abnormal nerve paths in the heart (bypass tracts) or disease of the conduction system may be responsible!
ECHOcardiogram / LABORATORY work-up – may all be necessary for further assessment and assistance. You may even need Electro Physiological Studies (EPS)

The treating doctor may suggest them depending on need, based on his assessment of the situation.

Take care
Wishing all well
God bless
Good luck
