Hello Dr, I broke my ankle back in December 2013, and got better around May 2014, so I have been pretty much immobile for about 6 months. I believe I developed Sleep Apnea, and that is my question, do I have Sleep Apnea, or something else? Symptoms: When I try to sleep my lower throat/chest area gets tight and my hearts beating fast as a result of lack of oxygen, because every time I try to fall asleep I wake up gasping for air. I eventually fall asleep after twisting and turning, and sometimes these episodes happen, and sometimes not where I can sleep fine. I am wondering if this is due to immobility? Thanks.

My fiance has sleep apnea badly she is a hispanic female 45. I am a wounded veteran and have very limited funds from the government. All my medical is done by the VA hospital with all my surgeries she has to obtain insurance due to me unable to pay many of bills I have. Thanks I don,t have the money and I am sorry I maybe wasted your time. I apologize. She awakes many times and puts her pinky as deep as she can and shakes her finger very rapidly to try and get to itch, but to no avail. She is about 5 6 about 260 lbs. The apnea may be part due to the intense long drawn snoring which eventually goes to her not breathing for 10 to 20 seconds maybe once a minute or two. Her snoring may have to do with this issue because she will awake and then try to get to itch in inner ear. I know the apnea is the major concern gastric bypass and other treatments were discussed but I stay awake every night as long as 5 in the morning just to scratch her head so she will not stop breathing so much. The snoring is the most intense I ever heard and I was in the sevice with some big boys that I thought was loud they are not even close to her. If any of you can maybe help me help her I would be grateful and I would be indebited to anyone who would help. T. Fitzgerald

Does the rocking of a ship increase insomnia in those who have recently had a stroke and exhibit an increased startle reaction? I recently shared a cabin with a stroke victim who claimed she could not sleep all night. What I noticed is that repeatedly in the middle of the night she would suddenly and violently wake up without cause and think I was making noise. She also the week before the trip underwent an invasive procedure endoscopicly to see if she needed a stint placed in her artery. Could she be reacting to that, too? She claimed she slept better once we were in a hotel on land and I got my own cabin. Others in my family report that I am a quiet sleeper, so I believe I am not the cause of her insomnia which has plagued her all her life. A very light sleeper, or is something more serious going on that her doctor needs to know about? Thanks for your answer in advance. Nina Daniel
