I Have Toenail Growing Underneath Another. Do I Need To Worry ?

The toenail on my left big toe stopped growing some time ago, I m not exactly sure why, but it happened after I cut it one day (I m not sure if I might have accidentally cut it too short and that could have caused it). After some time of it not growing at all, another nail started growing underneath it. It s been months and this other nail is still in the process of growing underneath the old one, it s about halfway out. I can feel when this nail grows, it hurts a little/feels a little tingly under the old nail. I m not sure how worried I should be or if I should be worried at all or if there s anything that I should be doing about it? Should I tell my physician about this or should I go to the emergency room for it? Or am I just freaking out over a small issue?

Hi, Welcome to HealthcareMagic Forum.
You are suffering from Ingrown Toenail. It occurs when the edge of the nail grows down and into the skin of the toe. There may be pain, redness, and swelling around the nail. It can be caused by poorly fitting shoes and toenails that are not trimmed properly. You ca treat it at home if it is mild, like, Soak the foot in warm water 3 to 4 times a day if possible. Keep the toe dry, otherwise. Gently massage over it and gently place a small piece of cotton under, you can wet it with a antiseptic or water. When trimming your toenails, briefly soak the foot in warm water to soften the nail, Use a clean, sharp trimmer, Trim straight across the top. Do not trim too short. Do not try to cut the ingrown portion of the nail, This may aggravate the problem. Avoid wearing shoes and use sandals instead, until the pain and swelling subside. If this is not helping, you should be seeing a surgeon, who may excise the nail.

Good Luck.
