What Could Cause A Shop Painful Twinge In The Back Leading To Extreme Pain And The Need To Favour The Lower Back While Walking?

I felt a sharp painful twinge in my back on Sunday. Since I have had extreme pain when getting up from a sitting position and when walking I feel like I m favoring my lower back. if I bend in either direction to pick up something without facing the item I feel like my legs are going to buckle. If I stand there a few moments it feels like my lower back loosens up and then I m able to keep walking.

Hello,

You are experiencing painful twinge in the back leading to extreme pain. Your symptoms may be indicative of arthritis, osteoporosis, muscle and ligament strain, sciatica, bulging or ruptured disk, etc. You are suggested to maintain correct posture when you are standing, sitting or sleeping. Maintain healthy weight.

Get connected to a physical therapist and do exercises to built muscle strength and flexibility. Avoid using the back for bending, you can bend your knees for bending or lifting anything. People who are prone to depression and anxiety appear to have a greater risk of back pain.

Stress can cause muscle tension, which can contribute to back pain. Being overweight or lack of exercises triggers back pain. Some medical conditions like arthritis and cancer may be indicative of back pain. Get clinically examined by a GP, get all required blood tests, imaging tests and investigations done so that treatment can be started at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
