How Can A Painfully Swollen Area Beside The Toe Be Treated?

I am having throbbing pain on the side of my big toe. Yesterday it only hurt very slightly when the area was touched. A tiny part of it was green, so I soaked it in Epsom salt and sprayed it with hydrogen peroxide twice. This drained the pus out but it still remained a little red and swollen. After I soaked it I forgot it even hurt. Until it was touched then there was very slight pain, but it would go away instantly. Everything went fine the rest of the day, but I woke up tonight with throbbing pain. The pain won t stop. It constantly hurts without being touched, and the redness and swelling is worse than it was yesterday. I am currently soaking it in Epsom salt. It is taking the edge off the pain. The swelling and redness have gone down a little, but it is not giving full relief. The swollen area hurts constantly, and the toenail hurts only when touched. I pulled aside the skin and didn t see a hangnail, and it seems like it is too far down the side to be an ingrown toenail.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your toe & the area around it is swollen, red with pus & it hurts; you have infection due to either injury or ingrown toenail. You are suggested to get it physically examined.

Neglect will result in abscess formation. You need a tetvac injection & antibiotics (ampilox-500).

Your treating doctor will get the wound cleaned & drained if required. Sometimes a minor surgery is needed to help you get relief from the discomfort.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
