Hi, I ve been on thyroid medication for years for under active thyroid and have had issues with insomnia the last couple of years. I don t have insurance and would like to gradually go off the medication if that wouldn t be too risky. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
I hope you are aware of the fact that thyroid is a hormone which is very important for the basal metabolism in our body.
The deficiency of the hormone can have multisystem side effects. The major organs in our body also require the hormone for its normal functioning. The deficiency of the hormone can result in a low heart beat and affects the normal functioning of the brain.
You have to get your thyroid blood levels checked. If it shows a normal thyroid level you can consult a physician and get the drug dose reduced or withdrawn. But, if it still continues to be low you have to continue thyroid medications. If you withdraw medications you have to get thyroid levels checked periodically.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Meera Rajeev
