How To Wean Off Klonopin?

I am attempting to titrate off of clonepin for sleep and having a very hard time, have alot of paradoxical reactions and allergic reactions to many drugs. my doctor who is doing a one breast mastectomy for me is planning on tramadol for my pain med after because I ve prooved allergic to the codeine family and percoset and vicodin in the past. i am frightened to go on this tramadol since I ve had such a hard time trying to get off of the clonepin and off of benzos for sleep for the last 14yrs since a series of injuries and extensive oral surgeries. He is not altering his decision and doesn t hear me. What can I do? What are my choices? My nurse friend says morphine for me would be the best choice. What are your thoughts? (I hate meds!!!)

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I don't think morphine is a good suggestion. It may help in short term treatment, but it's not a long term solution at all, due to its developing dependence and tolerance with potential for abuse. Tramadol is more suitable to that purpose. As for Clonopin and Benzos it is another issue which won't be solved by the pain medication. Weaning of Clonopin has to be done gradually, reducing the dosage over several weeks/months. If there is a background of anxiety causing the sleep issues though you will probably need medication for that. Amitriptyline would be an alternative to consider as it is a first choice anti-anxiety medication which also promotes sleep. In addition to that it is also beneficial in chronic pain so that would be another point in its favor.

Hope I have answered your query.
