How To Treat Spinal Stenosis?

I am female, 61 yrs old 106 lbs diagnosed with spinal stenosis. I've had 3 edidural lumbar injections with no success. My question is...I also have hepatitis C. I just had a blood test with very high liver enzymes. Does the epidural injections affect my liver enzymes? I had injection 1 month ago

Hi, thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. You had epidural injection for spinal canal stenosis. I think, the doctor had given you some painkiller or steroid injection for relief. You are hepatitis C positive. You had asked one question -

Epidural injection affect on liver enzyme?

I will explain it to you. Epidural injection injects drug in epidural space. It does not cause direct entry of drug into blood. The idea behind epidural injection is giving drug at local site.
If same drug will be given through blood (intravenous route), that will reach at every organ. It will affect liver and kidney more. While epidural drug will first act at local site and some amount will finally reach liver and kidney. So the damage will be less.

The point is epidural injection is relatively safe for liver and kidney. Can it cause rise in liver enzyme? Yes, it can cause. The rise will depend upon the type of drug. Steroids can cause rise in liver enzyme. But chances are less.

Try to rule out other causes like active Hepatitis C, alcohol, any oral or IV drug. Consult your doctor to rule out any progressive worsening of liver function tests.

Hope it will help you. If still in doubt, do let me know
Thanks. take care,
Dr Ishu Bishnoi
