How To Treat Severe Sinus Infection That Hasn T Improved Despite Steroids?

Hi, I have an appointment on the 19th to see a clinical doctor. However, I m not sure I should wait. I ve had a sinus infection for a month and a half now. I went to the ER and they told me I have yet another URI. This makes the third one in four months. They gave me five pills of steroids. I am so dizzy sometimes its hard to stand. My left ear is totally blocked and now the right ear is blocked as well. My right eye is red and has become worse over the month. I ve been vomiting more and more. The back of my head hurts, my teeth hurt, and the sides of my face hurt. I have a cough that appears to go away and then comes back. So far I ve tried for the last two weeks... Warm salt water rinse five times a day. Nasal spray twice a day, Musinex, decongestant, cough syrup (Before the ER trip, not any longer). Excedrin for pain. Warm compress on my throat and ears. None of it seems to be helping, in fact I m getting worse. I woke up today and wanted to scream because the pain in my ears and face was almost unbearable. Should I go back to the ER or wait it out?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your detailed history suggestive of sinusitis, recurrent URI and so on.
I would advise you the following:
First of all consult an ENT Surgeon as you now need a Specialist's opinion, ENT Endoscopy and investigations:
CT scan of sinuses will actually help to know the extent of the disease.
X-ray of chest.
Tests of blood for WBC, IgE for allergy, to rule out diabetes and any other as would be advised.
All these will give proper diagnosis so that a Specific treatment for a specific time period can help.
Also watch for deficiency of Vitamin A and D and if low on blood tests then correction would help a lot.
If the medical management fails you may need Surgery also.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
