How To Treat Parotitis On The Face While On Nitrofurantoin For UTI?

I have one more day s prescription of Nitrofurantoin for a UTI. I have just today developed Parotitis on both sides of my face. Should I skip the last day s dose and hope the UTI is resolved or take it one more day then allow the Swollen glands to resolve? Thanks for any advice. YYYY@YYYY

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Swelling on both sides of face on taking Nitrofurantoin can be due to an Allergic reaction to the drug that is commonly used in urinary tract infection..

However it does not look like Parotitis as Parotitis is commonly due to infection in the Parotid gland that is a salivary gland..

So it looks to me most probably like an Allergic reaction.

So my suggestion is to consult an Emergency room and get evaluated and a clinical examination can be done.
In case if there is allergic reaction the antibiotic needs to be stopped, and alternate antibiotics like Norfloxacin can be advised..

To reduce the allergy symptoms anti allergics like Benadryl can be advised and if swelling is in excess a steroid shot can be given..
Also do cool compresses over the swelling..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
