How To Treat Irregular Heartbeat?

I have been diagnosed with irregular heartbeat and prescribed medicine which does not seem to be working. The heartbeat happens for hours on end with little relief from the medicine. I have been on it for a week ..was told ablation might work. Checked background on doctor and could find little information. Should I recontact him regarding no relief or I am being premature?

Hello,

You are suffering from irregular heart beats. A normal heart rate is 50 to 100 beats per minute. Arrhythmia is commonly caused due to CAD, coronary artery disease, changes in the heart muscle, electrolyte imbalances in the blood (such as sodium or potassium). Stay adequately hydrated. Irregular heart rhythms can also occur in 'normal healthy' hearts. Stay away from addictions if any as it can trigger your symptoms.

Medical conditions that can cause irregular heart beats are AF, atrial flutter, ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, sick sinus syndrome, etc. Arrhythmia may make you feel tired, in such a case you should take rest and avoid anxiety and stress. If your heart has an irregular (uneven) beat or is beating too fast, cardioversion is a way to restore your heart to a regular rhythm.

Cardioversion also treats other kinds of abnormal heartbeats, including atrial flutter, arterial tachycardia and ventricular tachycardia. Cardioversion or defibrillation used in emergency for people who suffer sudden life-threatening arrhythmias. Get clinically examined by a cardiologist and get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
