How to treat heart palpitations?

hello, I was cleaning and working up a real sweat. I bent down to pick up something and when I stood up, my heart felt like it was flopping around. I got freaked out and my anxiety started to really act up. I went to sit down and had a drink of water, trying to cool down, and it started up again for a few seconds. That freaked me out and I had a full out anxiety attack, and started shaking and hyperventilation. Now im freaked out and keep pacing around, im not sure if its going to happen again. With my last pregnancy, i was on metoprolal(spelling) cuz i had heart palpitations frequently and I didnt want it to be anything serious. I had a ultrasound done on my heart in sept 2009, and my cardiologist said my heart structure was nice and strong. I am going through a lot of stress between work and home, and i am currently on .25mg of alprozalom 2 times daily to help with anxiety. But today really freaked me out!

Cardiologist 's  Response

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that your symptoms seem yo be related to anxiety.

Nevertheless, I recommend checking some blood lab tests:
- complete blood count
- thyroid hormone levels
- blood electrolytes.

An ambulatory 24-48 hours ECG monitoring would help examine your heart rhythm trends for a prolonged time and exclude possible cardiac arrhythmia.

In the meantime, I would recommend practising Yoga and meditation. It is not recommendable taking alprazolam for a long period of time, because it can lead to addiction and tolerance.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello, I am a 24 year old female and I have been suffering from heart palpitations for 2 days now, this is the third day. I ve stopped drinking tea and coffee because I thought perhaps I had had too much caffeine. I ve really not been able to sleep well, I am very aware of my heart beating so very hard throughout the night and I have been unable to sleep on my side as I feel my heart restricted and beating in a way which frightens me. I do suffer from anxiety but I have not suffered an attack for around 6 months. this feels like a physical problem as opposed to one related to stress. I have never before felt my heart beat this way and for so long. Can you help? I m very worried.

I just came from restaurant and at the restaurant I was eating my food and I noticed that my heart started beating very rapidly I didn t do any physical activity I wasn t nervous or anything like that my heart just started beating very rapidly to the point where I can feel it if I just placed my hand on it. I went out to dinner at around seven and it s still doing the same thing and it is now 10:30. I feel the heartbeat more so towards my throat, like the bottom of my throat. if I touch mycollarbone I feel the heartbeat there. so I was wondering what could cause this and how I could stop it because it is continuing to beat rapidly and it s uncomfortable please help me Dr.

For years, I periodically have some heart palpitations with tightness in the center of my chest. Heart test show not much going on, I just deal with them when I get them. Today however, I had a MRI for my lower back. I felt fine during the test but afterwards my chest ached. Similar to esophageal spasms, but I also had heart palpitations. My heart rate is about 120-134 bpm and I keep needing to deep sigh breathe every five minutes or so. I am 61 and was just sitting watching TV when I finally was concerned enough to check. I also have been hearing my heart pound below my ears on and off for the last month or so. I have a follow up with my Heart Dr. But not until Middle of July. Do I need to be concerned about this today?
