Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How To Treat Head Injury With Little Bruising In A Child?
My daughter fell and hit her head on the corner of her bedroom door. She cried for about two minutes and was up and playing. I put a cold compress on the knot instinctively and the swelling went down (the goose egg wasn't very big. About the size of a quarter). She then laid down and fell asleep. I let her sleep for about half an hour and woke her up and she fussed with me and stayed awake for about another half hour and went back to sleep. Is it necessary for a trip to the hospital now or should I just keep an eye on her for the next 24 hours and see if anything changes. The swelling is gone. There is just a little bruise now. I am really confused because her daddy's co-worker is a certified emt and she said that as long as the knot wasn't sunk in, she would be okay and to apply the cold compress for 20 minutes. Please help me.
The knot formation after a trauma is due to accumulation of fluid & blood and it is called Hematoma. The blood cells accumulated are eventually broken down and absorbed in the body. But this is a slow process & takes times to disappear completely. Till that time, symptomatic relief is obtained by taking analgesics, ice compression & adequate rest. If it still persists or there are any other associated symptoms like fever, vomiting, loss of consciousness, convulsions, etc...then it will be better to consult her Doctor.
