How To Treat Head Ache Close To Left Ear And Neck?

Hi everyone, I have been having this pain on my head, close to my left ear and neck. It happened 2 weeks ago and ever since then, I have been on pain killers. Consulted a GP and Neurologist but they can't seem to pinpoint the root cause. I'm a little concerned since I have never experience this before. I somehow feel it has something to do with my neck, reason because at certain posture, the pain is less apparent ie. if my lie down on my bed, with my right face facing the pillow or if I sit up straight with my head rested on the back. Other than that, the pain is there. Pain is throbbing. The thing is, I can twist my neck, without much of an issue. Certain not a stiff neck but if I shake my head, it gets painful. Please please if anyone could share with me what might be my problem, I would be extremely grateful. Thanks. Rgds, Victor

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. This focal pain on left ear and neck could be due to
: ear pathology like ear infection, wax in ear
: intracranial mass left side e.g. left cerebella-pontine tumor (acoustic tumor)
To differentiate between two, I will provide details of each

: ear pathology - It usually presents as pain in ear, mostly severe, ear discharge like blood/pus/watery, decreased hearing, ringing in ear without actual sound, staining of pillow in morning after waking up from sleep, fever.

If you are having similar kind of features, you should consult ENT specialist. He will examine your ear and diagnose the actual disease. Meanwhile at home, you should
- keep your ear dry
- avoid scratching the ear
- maintain hygiene
- you can take antibiotic course like co-amoxyclav therapy after proper prescription
- you can take painkiller like Diclofenac sodium after proper prescription

: Intracranial lesion - Most commonly cerebella-pontine tumor in brain can cause left ear pain. Other symptoms are hearing loss, ringing in ear, sometimes facial weakness on same side.

If your features are similar to above, you should consult neurosurgeon. He will advise you MRI brain to rule out the lesion. Further management will be decided after MRI report.

Hope it will help you. You can reach unto some conclusion. If still no relief, consult doctor.

Thanks. Take care.
