How To Treat Groin Itching In Pregnancy?

I recently shaved my inner thighs and went swimming. It became itchy, a few days later it was red and burning slightly and still itchy. The day after that it began to smell. I am wondering what this is and if it can be treated topically without steroids as I am 4 months pregnant.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

According to your description the possibilities are:
Skin abrasions due to shaving would result in inflammatory reaction. Abrasions due to shaving might have got infected because of any possible pathological organisms present in the swimming pool or reaction to chemical agents in swimming pool.
As any condition, in pregnancy you should be carefully treated. You need to consult your gynecologist once and get examined. By clinical examination the exact nature and cause of the problem can be identified.
If there are no signs of infection, then topical anti-inflammatory and analgesic cream can help, Paracetamol in combination with Lidocaine is comparatively better drug in pregnancy.
If there is any possibility of infection, then you may need topical antibiotic or antifungal creams, depending on the nature of infection.
Clotrimazole belongs to category B drug in pregnancy and can be used, if needed with your doctor's advice and steroids may not be needed, unless condition is severe.

Hope I have answered your query and I will be happy to answer any further follow-up queries.

Take care.
