How To Treat Enlarged Tonsil?

Hi, my left tonsil is enlarged from last 1 or 1.5 months but its not creating any problems in any activity. I took antibiotics for over 2.5 weeks but still no change. No eating problem, no breathing problem, but still I am concerned because its large from last 1.5 months and just the left one. What should I do?

Hi. I understand your concern for the enlarged tonsil. Tonsils may be enlarged or may appear enlarged after a viral illness or bacterial illness. This condition is called chronic tonsillitis . Your tonsil may be enlarged due to chronic inflammation . However, Enlarged tonsil of long duration has to be investigated to rule out a condition called tonsillar lymphoma. This condition called lymphoma is a rare type of tumour . It may be diagnosed using a test called tonsillar FNAC- fine needle aspiration cytology. Alternatively the tonsil may be removed and sent for a test called histopathology . Since your tonsil is enlarged or appears to be so I would suggest that you get a check up done by an ENT consultant. If necessary tests such as tonsillar FNAC and CT imaging of neck may be done. They may also check if there are other lymph nodes that are enlarged in your neck or elsewhere. It is important to get investigated in order to allay your anxiety. You may also get a complete blood count and a peripheral smear done. Best regards.
