I have a bartholin cyst that has increased to the size of a plum in the space of 3 days. It happened last year and became an abscess, I was put on antibiotics and maybe a day after I sat down and it came away. I have now been on flucoxacillin for 2 days and no difference. What should I do as I start a new job on Saturday and cant be in any discomfort for then. Please note I can barely sit down and antibiotics are making me feel very sick.
The bartholin glands are located on each side of the vaginal opening and secrete fluid that lubricate the vagina. Sometimes the openings of these glands become obstructed, causing fluid to back up into the gland. The result is relatively painless swelling called a Bartholin's cyst.
A Cyst can become infected, forming an abscess. It becomes painful/tender, or you experience fever. Infection of bartholin glands will require oral antibiotics to be administered along with pain-killers. Since you are already on antibiotics, i would advice that you continue with it for a week.
Since it is large, it may cause discomfort like aching and pain during sexual intercourse and pain while walking. You could start with Sitz bath at home and take OTC painkillers on SOS basis like paracetamol or ibuprofen.
Recurrent cysts or large cysts need to be drained by catheter, marsupialised or completely removed.
