How To Treat A Painful Red Toe Whose Swelling Does Not Subside After Taking Cephalexin, Ciprofloxacin, Sulfamethoxazole And Zyovox?

4 weeks ago I had a pedicure, 2 days later a toe on my left foot became red, swollen, very tender, painful to wear sneaker. Had doctor's visit 2 days later, put on cephalexin 500mg, moderate reaction to it, changed to ciprofloxacin 750mg 2x day,4 days later changed to sulfamethoxazole tmf ds 800-160mg 2x/day. Now 4 days of zyovox 600mg. There have been no changes in condition of toe. The toe is not draining and is not festering, just red, swollen and painful in sneaker as stated before, also painful to touch and walking. Previously had a burning sensation, but that has subsided to a large degree. thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

Swelling, increased redness and pain would occur as a response to any inflammatory process this would include trauma or infection.

In addition to completing the course of antibiotics given, you can also consider the following: (1) blood tests particularly the complete blood count to see if the white cell count is elevated. This would go up in an infection but if the symptoms are related to a non infective process, the level should be normal

(2) soaking the toe, 2 to 3 times a day in a salt solution (salt and water) which may help reduce the inflammatory process

(3) the use of anti inflammatory pain killers

(4) x ray of the toe

I hope this helps
