Addiction Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi,

He should see a psychiatrist for help in quitting smoking. There are medicines like bupropion, which help in reducing the craving for cigarettes and therefore, make it easier to quit. There is also the option of using nicotine containing gums as replacement for cigarettes to avoid withdrawal and for harm reduction. A psychiatrist will help him choose the best possible option. Till you get to see a doctor, ask him to reduce the number of puffs he smokes from each cigarette by throwing it away before it is finished. He should also try to delay each cigarette as long as he can. These measures will reduce his nicotine intake and make it easier to quit.

Best wishes.
