Hallow dear,

If the bleeding does not stop even 7 weeks after the medical abortion, you have to take this adverse event rather seriously. It can be:

1. In complete abortion: Ultrasonography will reveal it. If it is incomplete abortion, by this time it must have got infected also. Surgical evacuation of the uterus under antibiotic umbrella is indicated.

2. Infection: It may be even after complete abortion if the hygiene was not properly observed. A course of antibiotics may be required to control the infection.

3. Development of choriocarcinoma or molar pregnancy: Qualitative evaluation of hCG will diagnose or rule out this. Even if the choricarcinoma (a type of cancer of placental tissue) is developed, it can be very effectively and successfully treated by Methotrexate and Actinomycine D.

4. Bleeding or clotting disorders: Examination of blood will reveal it. Bleeding Time, Clotting time, Prothrombin time, Fibrinogen Degradation Products, Platelet counts are some of the tests which help diagnosing these faults. The treatment depends upon the cause, but usually blood transfusion may be required.

Ultrasonography, Urine Pregnancy test with blood hCG levels if indicated and Blood examination will clinch the diagnosis.

What ever is the cause, since you are bleeding for 7 weeks continuously, please get your blood examined for haemoglobin percent and peripheral blood smear. If you have bled a lot, you may require blood transfusion also.

This condition should not be ignored at all and should be reported to the Obstetrician ASAP.
