How To Reduce Itching In Arms?

My arms itch. Antihistamine cream and other creams don t stop it. Feels like a sharp pin is being poked into my skin in the same spots. I will scratch until I get an open wound. Sometimes that will end the itching sometimes it will come back as it heals. Ice or cold packs seem to be the only thing to help the itching.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The cause of itching should be identified. Any history of fever, rashes should be ruled out. Rashes could be due to viral fever, any raised patch like lesions or boils, redness should be ruled out. Any history of food or drug allergy should be identified.

Blood sugar levels, complete blood counts including eosinophil count and Liver function test should be done and based on the results, further management will be decided.

Since antihistamines are not effective, steroids should be used after ruling out acute infections since the drug can mask the signs and symptoms by temporarily reducing the infections.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
