How To Prevent High Sugar Level During Pregnancy ?

This is the problem of my sister in-law. She s been worried about her pregnancy due to high blood sugar level. She had a test for the second time and still the result is the same. Her obstetrician scolded her in a way that maybe she didn t follow the advice she gave. Other than sugar level test what are things she must do? What are the foods should she eat and what are those to be avoided? Also, what are the risk or the effect to her and to her baby if her sugar level don t go to normal? Her due date is on the 3rd week of July 2011.

hi diabetes duering pregnancy can cause harm to the mother and child.the fetus can be malformed, have medical problems etc.If she is on insulin, then strict monitoring of blood sugar, proper meal times and regular physical activity is mandatory.
You need to consult a dietician to create a diabetic diet chart for her.Avoid carb,,fat.
Whole grains are better.High protein diet is good.Fruits low in sugar are apple, papaya, berries, lime, oranges etc.Avoid bananas.Avoid all desserts, cake, ice cream, caffeine, chocolates, areated drinks.
A diet chart will be made according to her sugar levels and exact amount of calorie intake can be calculated.
This has to be done asap because already she is in the third trimester.Complications are more and difficult to anticipate this late.

your sister is suffering from gestational diabetes.Gestational diabetes usually starts halfway through the pregnancy.
The goals of treatment are to keep blood sugar (glucose) levels within normal limits during the pregnancy, and to make sure that the growing baby is healthy.
non stress and ultrasound is needed throughout pregnancy to check both you and your baby throughout the pregnancy.
The best way to improve your diet is by eating a variety of healthy foods.your diet should be moderate in fat and protein and provide controlled levels of carbohydrates through foods that include fruits, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates (such as bread, cereal, pasta, and rice). You will also be asked to cut back on foods that contain a lot of sugar, such as soft drinks, fruit juices, and pastries.
You will be asked to eat three small- to moderate-sized meals and one or more snacks each day. Do not skip meals and snacks.
You will need to monitor your blood sugar (glucose) levels and blood pressure during treatment.
there is complication if diabetes is not under control like
infant's large size, development of diabetes later in life,
Increased risk of newborn death and stillbirth,
Low blood sugar (glucose) or illness in the newborn.
good luck
